Flying Into the Future With Large Language Models

Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: The idea that artificial intelligence is a “disruptive technology” has been discussed for many years, but it truly entered mainstream consciousness in the early 2010s, when deep learning algorithms accomplished a series of tasks in image recognition and language processing that were previously felt to be impossible [1]. In 2017, researchers from Google published a highly influential paper, which introduced a novel model architecture called a transformer that changed the field of natural language processing and was directly responsible for the rise of the large language model (LLM) [2]. These discoveries formed the context behind the quiet release of ChatGPT by OpenAI in November of 2022, which resulted in an explosion of interest among a broad swath of researchers and the lay public. The algorithm captured the imagination of the public due to its ability to hold a free-flowing conversation and intuit a user's intentions, but on a deeper level, it has fundamentally shifted the boundaries that separated work traditionally requiring human input and work that lay within the scope of machines [3].
