Love Thy Neighbour? Social Attitudes Towards Persons With Disabilities
Year: 2022
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This paper examines whether exposure to persons with disabilities in the locality influences attitudes toward their social and economic inclusion. We exploit arguably exogenous geographic variation in disability rates caused by bombing during the Second Indochina War to draw causal inference. We find that higher rates of disability in the local district increases people's perceptions of employer's willingness to hire people with disabilities. The effects on individual attitudes vary according to birth cohort. Among younger cohorts, higher exposure to disability increases support for the inclusion of children with disabilities in regular schools whereas among older cohorts it leads to more prejudicial attitudes on issues of marriage and community living.
