Abstract: As the charitable sector has grown in scope and size, in many countries across the world charities are playing an increasingly important role in the provision of public services on behalf of national and local governments. The greater social need, together with the shift from grants to contract funding, alongside the diminishing availability of public funds have all played their part in raising the importance of accountability. Adopting stakeholder theory as a lens through which to examine charity accountability, it will be seen that the existence of multiple stakeholders may enhance accountability, but it also leads to conflict, due to their heterogeneous expectations. Against this background, this chapter will demonstrate that achieving holistic accountability is often challenging for charities and will suggest some methods for enhancement.
