Abstract: The universe is composed of "order" and "chaos"-at least from the metaphorical perspective.Oddly enough, however, it is to this "metaphorical" universe that our nervous system appears to have adapted.-Peterson, 1999.Poised midway between the unvisualizable cosmic vastness of curved spacetime and the dubious, shadowy flickerings of charged quanta, we human beings, more like rainbows and mirages than like raindrops or boulders, are unpredictable self-writing poemsvague, metaphorical, ambiguous, and sometimes exceedingly beautiful.-Hofstadter, 2007 This thesis is dedicated to Raymond W. Gibbs Jr., author of Metaphor Wars (2017).Many issues addressed in this thesis came up in our fruitful conversations about metaphors.
