Abstract: This thesis aims to analyze the dynamics and sustainability of the meliponin (stingless bees) honey production chain of the Urubu River region -Boa Vista do Ramos (AM), Amazon region -Brazil, with the following objectives: (i) to identify and analyze the trajectory of the honey producers and the reasons that led them to get involved with the activity of the honey productions; (ii) to raise the socioeconomic profile of honey producers; (iii) to analyze the local (collective) organization of honey producers and the institutional arrangements of the honey production chain; (iv) to investigate the contribution of local knowledge (honey producers) to the development of honey production; and (v) to analyze the advances and challenges of honey production in the light of the Sustainable Development Goals. The meliponiculture of the Urubu River is represented by COOPMEL (Cooperative of Indigenous Bee Breeders of the Amazon)composed of 50 families distributed in four communities. To achieve these objectives, this case study was analyzed from the perspective of governance of the common resources, collective action, collaborative arrangements and integrated knowledge that involved the management of indigenous stingless bees. The research showed that meliponiculture is the result of the collaborative process between the cooperative and various actors who worked to strengthen the honey production chain in Boa Vista do Ramos. The results pointed out advances in local governance (cooperative, arrangement of collaborations, integrated knowledge and technology), but it presents deficiencies, limitations and internal conflicts that can prevent the growth of the activity in a long-term, mainly due to institutional weaknesses. In addition, local governance is not enough to reach the multiple dimensions of sustainability (ODS)the results point to the need for regional governance as well.
