Abstract: Malaria in pregnancy is a major cause of morbidity and mortality especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The disease is caused by the protozoon Plasmodium , which is transmitted through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. The most common symptom is fever. The disease is worse in women who suffer from hemoglobinopathies and live outside holoendemic areas with low immunity. Pregnancy complications include miscarriages, intrauterine growth restriction, preterm labor, and intrauterine fetal death. Prevention of malaria is achieved through intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine pyrimethamine and use of insecticide treated nets. Treatment is via artemisin-based combination therapy.
