Data Driven City Management: Real-Time Bus Bunching Prevention and Operation Support System for Bus Lines

Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: Although there are separate systems that evaluate the time, position and travel quality components of the internet of things (IOT) data in public transportation, it is seen that they are not widely used in practice and the importance of proactive intervention and data-oriented work in operations is not fully understood. It is understood that there are problems in the implementation processes and studies based on the literature are not widespread. In this study, the design and work done to reduce the density caused by the use of stops by more than one line in the urban bus operation, to eliminate the road congestion and traffic caused by the crowding of the buses to the stop, and to prevent the passengers from running back and forth are examined. In the study, a system design based on scientific foundations, taking into account the perceptual characteristics of the driver and operator, providing voyage regulation for continuous awareness and long-term planning, eliminating the stop crowd, and creating situational awareness was created. In the developed model, vehicles approaching the stops are monitored with the internet of things approach, and an approach is designed to prevent them from accumulating at the stops with the smart driver interactive system. Considering the remote monitoring and voyage planning, considering the literature and prototype applications, it has been evaluated that this approach will help reduce the size of the stops, reduce the variation between the lines and make the income distribution among private operator vehicles fair.In addition, a data analysis ground is prepared for active plan changes and interventions by the operator.
