Abstract: We have identified specific molecular electronic-structural aspects of odorants and tastants that elicit a specific olfactory or gustatory response from an individual. Our approach goes beyond functional groups or gross molecular features such as aromatic rings, aliphatic rings, or the chain lengths of these compounds. We target specific, reproducible electronic-structural features at the interatomic level. We identify atom pairs, even if the atoms are non-bonded.
