Abstract: Everybody at this meeting understands that New Zealand’s economic, social, and environmental development is very much dependent on an effective agricultural system producing products that the world wants, at a price that makes New Zealand wealthier and in a way that ensures our environment is protected. Each of those three elements requires a considerable investment in obtaining new knowledge through the processes of research. Unfortunately the New Zealand research system has not developed at the pace of those of our comparator nations.
