O0118 Evaluation of the Breathid System for the Diagnosis of Helicobacter Pylori Infection in Children

Year: 2004
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Introduction: We performed a preliminary study to compare results of 13C Urea Breath determinations from the Oridion BreathID System with measurements from a Mass Spectrophotometer in children ages 3–18 years with possible Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. Methods: Twenty-one children, 8 males and 13 females (mean age of 12.7 years) who were referred to our Pediatric Gastroenterology Division for clinical evaluation of symptoms suggestive of H. pylori infection were enrolled. They were tested simultaneously by BreathID system and Mass Spectrometry. BreathID system (Oridion®, Israel) is a desktop computer-sized 13C Urea Breath Test Analyzer that continuously measures the ratio of 13CO2: 12 CO2 in expired breath. This value is expressed as delta over baseline (DOB) and displayed graphically on a screen in real time. For those participants who underwent clinically indicated esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with biopsies, results of gastric biopsies and rapid urease test (RUT) were compared with the study results. Results: 3/21 participants were positive for H. pylori by Mass Spectrometry and BreathID system. 18/21 were negative by BreathID system and 17/21 were negative by Mass Spectrometry (Mass Spectrometer was not able to analyze one breath sample). All 3 participants with positive BreathID system results had a positive RUT and their gastric biopsies were also positive for H. pylori. There were no positive biopsies or RUT among the nine BreathID test negative participants who underwent EGD. The correlation for BreathID system was 100% for positive and negative cases. Conclusion: The results of this preliminary study showed that the molecular correlation spectrometry technology available for 13C urea breath test (such as that used by the Oridion BreathID system) is applicable for use in a Pediatric GI office setting for determining infection by H. pylori.
