Abstract: The pancreas plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism and is a key player in the pathophysiology of the different types of diabetes. It is therefore surprising that pancreatic disease is rare cause of diabetes, accounting for less than 0.5% of all cases of diabetes. Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging shows oedema of pancreas. Loss of the normal enhancement on dynamic CT scanning indicates pancreatic necrosis. Obstructive chronic pancreatitis is a rare condition that follows occlusion of pancreatic ducts by tumours, scarring, pseudocysts, or congenital anomalies. Abdominal pain is the predominant symptom and the usual reason for seeking medical care. The cause of the pain is unknown, but may relate to increased intrapancreatic or intraductal pressure, or to ischaemia of pancreas. Diabetes should be managed along conventional lines, with a few caveats. High carbohydrate and protein intakes are encouraged along with fat restriction in order to prevent steatorrhoea while preventing weight loss.
