iSpeak: Interactive Spoken Language Understanding System for Children with Speech and Language Disorders

Year: 2023
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Speech, language and communication disorders are the limitation, impairment, or delay in the ability to use expressive and/or receptive language in one or more areas: speech, including articulation and voice; using spoken, writing, or symbolic language; transmitting or interpreting it. According to ASHA, about 5-10% of Americans have communication disorder. Children with communication impairment usually find it difficult to explore environment, react to stimuli, receive, send, process, and understand spoken information. We introduce iSpeak, an interactive spoken language understanding system to aid caregivers including speech and language therapists, medical staffs, nurses and social workers to communicate with children who have speech disorder. This intelligent spoken language processing system facilitates children with speech disorders with phonology, syntax, and voice reconstruction in their speech for a high-quality articulation.
