Abstract: E l i z a b e t h ( b e t t y ) s m a r t was the second of three daughters and one son born into a wealthy upper-middle-class family in Ottawa, Canada, in 1913.Mum adored her father, Russel Sutherland Smart, a benevolent and bespectacled little man with burnished cheeks and a pouterpigeon chest.Despite his bookish and fusty background of law, regulations and records, he provided her and her siblings with a busy social life in a loving home that was frequented by diplomats, broadcasters, politicians and aspiring writers. He was a great reader and follower of the theater and perhaps sowed the seeds of a love of the English language in Mum.Louise-or Louie, her mother-was the firm matriarch in this respectable household, insisting on decorum and a well-bred demeanor from her children, particularly her daughters. The secure family base led to a defiant and iconoclastic trait in them, none more so than in Mum.This defiance drove her to stubborn childhood insubordination, and early on she established a love/hate relationship with her mother. She would write later, recalling her earliest memories:
