Abstract: The solution to the «mind-body» problem that Sigmund Freud used has been matter of historiographical discussion. In contrast to interpretations that suggest that Freud discreetly hoped to one day be able to reduce his psychoanalytic theory to brain processes, a series of examples are offered throughout the work of the father of psychoanalysis in which he disagrees with such an idea. Likewise, it is proposed as an alternative that Freud’s conception of the soul is the heir of multiple contributions by the 19th century romantic vitalists, especially Fechner.
