Abstract: We thank Dr. Jefford and his colleagues for their response to our manuscript, "Myths and Presumptions about Cancer Survivorship."The comments in this letter highlight our rationale for concluding that "shared care results in the best outcomes for cancer survivors" is a myth.As noted in this letter, while multiple models of survivorship care are discussed in the Institute of Medicine's seminal publication "Lost in Transition," the report states, "the shared-care delivery model appears to be especially relevant for the transition from active cancer treatment to survivorship care."The report goes on to call for physicians to "expand training opportunities to promote interdisciplinary, shared care."Separately, an American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) statement recommends "a shared-care model for survivorship care that includes communication between the oncology specialist and primary care provider."Promoting shared care as the recommended model of survivorship care suggests that it results in the best outcomes; why recommend a specific model of care unless it is better than others? However, as discussed in our paper, there is little evidence to suggest that shared care results better outcomes.
