Abstract: The first part of the thesis presents the development of a flexible graphene strain sensor with liquid metal interconnects for structural health monitoring. The second part presents the development of miniature sensors for the detection of nitrate ions in plants, soils, and tile drainage water from crop fields. First, a flexible strain sensor is developed for concrete structural health monitoring. The sensor features a flexible interconnect design, where liquid metal is introduced into microfluidic channels for interconnection and wiring. This design allows enhancing overall flexibility and robustness. A unidirectional strain sensor and a multidirectional rosette strain sensor are developed. We demonstrate the use of the unidirectional strain sensor for structural health monitoring of curved concrete structures. The rosette strain sensor detects the amplitude and angle of a primary strain in a multidirectional strain field. Second, a CMOS-compatible solid-state nitrate sensor is built based on a chemically sensitive or ion-selective field-effect transistor technology. The sensor exhibits fast and sensitive responses to varying nitrate ion concentrations with high selectivity. The sensor is assembled into a porous shell that allows filtering debris from the original liquid samples, such as tile drainage water, soil water, plant sap, and diluted manure solution. Additionally, the sensor is also shaped to be a needle for in-situ measurement of in-planta nitrate. This plant sensor detects dynamic changes in plant nitrate concentration. The sensor is also used to monitor plant nitrate concentration in response to light intensity, irrigation, and fertilization.
