Abstract: As the American Heart Association (AHA) celebrates 100 years of leading cardiovascular science and healthier lives, we have advanced our understanding of brain health and transformed science of cerebrovascular disease and stroke to include brain health science. With a mission of "Advancing health and hope for everyone, everywhere", the next century of AHA vision of "Bold Hearts" also includes "Bold Brains".From the beginning of modern neuroscience in 19 th century with Cajal's neuron doctrine theory of the structure of neurons and the 20 th century discoveries of neurotransmitters and brain imaging technology, the 1990's "Decade of the Brain" was certainly the most influential period in advancing public awareness of neuroscience and the importance of promotion of neuroscience research, treatments for neurological disorders, and prevention to persevere brain health. It took however two decades to integrate the concept of brain health to cardiovascular health in the 2010 AHA Presidential address 1 and another seven years to define optimal brain health.2 Since than the concept of brain health has evolved to include cognitive and mental health as an integral part of overall health and well-being.We have made remarkable strides in neurotechnology, molecular and genetic discoveries, wearable technology, big data science and machine learning/AI with new possibilities for treating neurological disorders and enhancing cognitive function. We have also expanded the focus on prevention and new lifestyle factors that contribute to brain health beyond traditional vascular risk factors such as diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management.Strong and broad partnerships with diverse communities and public health campaigns that promote awareness and amelioration of these factors have created novel paths for promotion of brain health in communities.3 Looking ahead to the future of brain health, our knowledge in understanding the drivers of brain and cognitive health will advance, and collectively we will overcome barriers in adoption of healthy behaviors, and rapidly implement and disseminate equitable brain health to all. This is no longer an aspirational goal.
