The makings of disability-inclusive sustainable communities: Perspectives from Australia
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Inclusion and equity are integral to achieving sustainable cities and communities. Yet the perspectives of disabled people have often been missing in this urban agenda. Foregrounding disability reveals that inclusive communities is a lived concept, that is multi-dimensional and embedded in place. However, current experiences reveal that communities and cities are still places of exclusion and isolation due to the legacy of ableist urban planning, governance, and design. The research found that five core interconnected elements help make communities and cities inclusive. These elements act as foundations to guide future planning practice and policy development to achieve the goal of inclusive sustained cities and communities for all citizens.
