Cumulative Knee Joint Loading and Early Markers of Cartilage Microstructure After Acl Injury

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Purpose (the aim of the study): Physical activity (PA) levels that repetitively load the knee are reduced after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) compared to uninjured controls. Cumulative knee joint loading accounts for knee joint loading magnitude during each step of gait (i.e., knee flexion moment [KFM]) and frequency of knee joint loading (daily step counts). This study aimed to identify modifiable movement markers after ACL injury that predict early changes in cartilage microstructure related to early osteoarthritis (OA). We hypothesized that lower cumulative knee joint loading (underloading) before and after ACLR would associate with progressive cartilage abnormality, and that cumulative knee joint loading would correlate more closely with cartilage microstructure than daily step counts and KFM.
