A brave new world: building the endoscopic resection bridge between Japan and the United States
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In the world of endoscopy, sometimes the greatest ideas come from lands afar. A promising young colorectal surgeon, practicing as a junior faculty in Japan, relishes the opportunity to take 2 years of sabbatical leave to the United States to bring something back to his academic department in Japan. It is not until he arrives in the United States that he realizes he possesses a unique skill—endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)—a procedure commonplace in Japan but rare in the United States. Realizing that he has essentially landed in the right place at the right time, he sets out on a mission to teach ESD to his American counterparts—and in doing so, finds his calling in medicine.
