A stakeholder-centred narrative exploration on carbon capture, utilisation and storage: A systems thinking and participatory approach
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In an ever-changing world, there is a growing need for tools and methods to comprehend the intricate interactions between social, technological and natural systems. Carbon emissions control, a key driver of today's climate instability, is one of the foremost challenges. Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) is a technology-based option whose outcomes may vary depending on the underlying stakeholders' values, worldviews and expectations. Their perception of CCUS can be rooted in technological and economic aspects but also in social and sustainability dynamics at play. This study aims to integrate stakeholders' knowledge to uncover and explore their perceptions about CCUS as a system and its potential outcomes. The investigation is based on systems thinking, network science using fuzzy cognitive mapping, and discursive landscape. The process involved participatory data collection, analysis, and elucidation. It revealed three distinct narratives based on the stakeholders' input. The findings highlight the importance of embracing a systemic approach and acknowledging diverse forms of knowledge when designing and planning technology-based and solutions-led strategies.
