Management considerations for adults with phenylketonuria and anxiety during the pegvaliase journey: a plain language summary

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Pegvaliase (PALYNZIQ®) is an enzyme injected under the skin to lower blood phenylalanine (Phe) levels in adults with phenylketonuria (PKU). PKU is a condition in which elevated levels of Phe in the blood and brain can affect the way a person thinks, feels and acts, and may impact their daily life. It is common for adults with PKU to experience anxiety. This can be caused by PKU itself as well as its management.Adults who choose to manage their PKU with pegvaliase may have anxiety to start this new treatment as well as anxiety due to self-injection, the titration schedule (how the dose is increased over time), side effects, dietary changes, and time to treatment response. The recommendations, developed by healthcare professionals (HCPs) and adults with PKU, provide strategies to manage anxiety throughout the treatment journey. Communication adapted to the person's needs, shared decision-making between HCPs and patients, and individualization of treatment plans are considered key aspects to manage anxiety in individuals treated with pegvaliase.
