COMPASS: Career and Occupational Mentoring for the Professional Advancement of Science Students
Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Students in the physical sciences often lack high-quality career and professional mentoring, even being unaware or reluctant to seek out campus career resources. They may seek such support directly from faculty, who may not be prepared to offer such advice and mentoring. To address this gap and provide faculty with skills and resources related to career mentoring, the COMPASS: Career and Occupational Mentoring for the Professional Advancement of Science Students workshops were developed. These workshops enlisted two-person teams from each institution, as well as commitment from an administrator to support the faculty participants. The workshops prompted participants first to identify relevant resources that already existed on their own campuses. Subject matter experts discussed the evidence of the need for career mentoring, use of individual development plans, effective mentoring and culturally responsive mentoring, and development of action plans. Participants identified specific needs at their institutions and carefully crafted institutional action plans over the course of the workshops. The 2019 workshop was held in person with two subsequent workshops held entirely online. In all cases, participant feedback was highly positive, and even improved in the online format. Participants were regularly surveyed for updates on progress toward their plans. Selected programs developed from COMPASS were presented in a symposium at the Spring 2023 ACS National Meeting. Some of these and others are presented in this volume, highlighting the wide variety of effective progams as well as the range of institutions in which they were implemented.
