Abstract: Edward Jegasothy and Francis Markham highlight an important consideration for researchers aiming to understand the effects of tobacco control policy changes on smoking prevalence in Australia. We acknowledge that the choice of pre-intervention period needs to be made carefully and should be based on a deep understanding of the tobacco control landscape in Australia over this time period. As outlined in our Article,1 Australia has been at the forefront of tobacco control internationally over the past 3–4 decades.
