Anolis sagrei – A Novel Reptile Model for Studying the Role of the Macular Carotenoids in the Retina
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Objectives: The fovea, a yellow pit in the retina is important for high-acuity vision and is commonly referred to as the macula lutea due to the high accumulation of carotenoids. These macular pigments (MP) act as antioxidants and blue light filters to protect the retina from photo-oxidative damage. Lutein (L), zeaxanthin (Z), and its isomer meso-zeaxanthin (MZ) are the major components of the MP. The most commonly used models for ocular research such as rodents lack a foveated retina. Hence, we explored the possibility of utilizing the brown anole (Anolis sagrei) lizards with a foveated retina as an animal model for studying the biochemical and physiological protective role of MP.
