Effect of mechanical scarification and biofertilizer treatments on seed quality enhancement in Senna (Senna alexandrina Mill.)

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Senna (Senna alexandrina Mill.) is an annual medicinal plant commonly known as “senna” or “Alexandrian senna” primarily known for its agricultural, industrial and ethno-medicinal purposes which belong to family leguminoceae. Senna seeds usually exhibit seed coat-imposed dormancy which may be due to impermeability of testa to water and gases. Seed scarification treatment is one of the methods adopted for seed dormancy breaking and better avenues for their establishment, growth and development of seedlings. In the present investigation seeds were treated with different mechanical scarification and biofertilizer treatments and their combined effect on germination and other seed quality attributes were studied. It was found that the seeds scarified for two (S3 ) to three minutes (S4 ) with mechanical scarification followed by seed priming treatment with Bio NPK (5ml/kg seeds) showed the highest seed germination percentage, highest seedling vigour index I and highest seedling vigour index II compared to control and other treatments.
