How to Propose a Great Chemical Reviews Article

Year: 2024
Type: editorial
Abstract: M any of us have benefitted from reading formative review articles over different stages of our careers: one that did not just compile a list of citations but that crystallized a concept and helped us make conceptual leaps by synthesizing the existing literature and presenting it in a coherent and forward-looking fashion. You have reached the point where you and your team want to contribute such a cogent review back to the community. With a 2022 Impact Factor of 62.1 1 and a global readership, you have identified Chemical Reviews as a desirable destination for your article. So what comes next?Although some Chemical Reviews articles are invited directly through the Thematic Issues process or individually, many articles published in Chemical Reviews are unsolicited reviews with topics proposed by individual authors.Because preparing a Chemical Reviews article is a substantial undertaking that requires considerable time and effort both to write and to review, prospective authors are asked to submit a short (maximum 5 pages) proposal. At present, a significant number of Chemical Reviews proposals are rejected, which can be discouraging to authors. However, this process, which allows feedback before major effort is invested, helps save authors, reviewers, and editors valuable time.More importantly, the proposal process allows for editors and reviewers to provide constructive feedback at a stage when a review is still easily shaped. In the end, the proposal process saves authors from the frustration of preparing a lengthy review that may not be a good fit for the Chemical Reviews readership.
