Demystifying Hispanic Versus Latino/a Versus Latinx: Which Do Emergency Department Patients Prefer?

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The term Latinx emerged in the early 2000s as a gender-neutral alternative to Latino/a to increase inclusivity for nonbinary individuals.1 Latinx has sparked debate: a 2019 online survey study of 3,030 US Hispanic/Latino/a/x adults found that only one-fourth had heard of Latinx, and 3% reported using it.2 Nevertheless, Latinx has become increasingly employed as a single pan-ethnic descriptor in research, with PubMed showing an increase from 2 to 1,066 articles including the term from 2016 to 2021.
