Abstract: Earlier this year, about the time when I was reading the manuscripts of the articles in this issue of Elements, I received a text message from a childhood friend in India.He had sent a clipping from a daily newspaper with the accompanying note: "What says the geologist?"The report was of an ocean at 700 km depth within the Earth.I tried to explain to the group what I knew, but ended up learning a lot myself in the process about science in news media and how it is received.
