Abstract: ISO 35001: 2019 – Biorisk management for laboratories and other related organisations was released five years ago to address the global need for regulation of biorisk management. This article seeks to explore the performance evaluation clause of ISO 35001 in the context of a biocontainment laboratory, with examples of implementation from overseas. The need for ISO 35001 and the barriers to certification are discussed, especially in relation to the New Zealand biocontainment laboratory. Implications for health and safety in New Zealand are also noted.
