Disparities in liver transplantation: One size may not fit all

Year: 2024
Type: editorial
Abstract: Sex disparities in access to liver transplantation are prevalent, and in various settings, it has been shown that women experience higher waitlist mortality and lower transplant rates compared with men awaiting liver transplantation. Allen et al1 attributed this disparity to 3 main factors: sex differences in (1) muscle mass and serum creatinine in the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, systematically underestimating waitlist mortality risk for women, (2) body size, and (3) MELD exception points.
