SWOT Analysis for Kirkuk Irrigation Project
Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The Kirkuk Irrigation Project is significant importance as one of Iraq’s foremost irrigation projects. The project now in operation provides irrigation to expansive regions inside the Kirkuk Governorate. The project was initiated in 1975, but remains unfinished in certain sections. Currently, only two phases of the project have been completed: the first phase, spanning from the Dibs area to Taza and the second phase, located within the administrative borders of Daquq . However, the third and fourth phases are still incomplete. The research aims to assess the project and identify its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The SWOT analysis serves as a solid foundation for informing and guiding decisions pertaining to the advancement of irrigation projects. The data indicates a significant decrease in the quantities of water within the project, as the discharge of the Kirkuk irrigation project in 2023 is limited to daily needs only and reached 30 cubic meters per second. This is a very low number compared to the period at the beginning of the project construction. To counteract these Threats, however, opportunities abound, such as the implementation of contemporary irrigation techniques for watering, the cultivation of water-efficient crops, and the utilization of groundwater in agriculture, given that a staggering 291,480 wells have been drilled throughout the governorate.
