Abstract: In this article the stages of formation and development of the essay genre, qualitative changes over the years of independence, its terms as a genre based on the historical and biographical approach of literary criticism, as well as theoretical conclusions about the image of a creative figure in the essay, the meaning of the personality image and worldview of the writer (paragraph 1 in the editorial office are analyzed. The role of the genre in the development of the modern literary process, the attitude of research scientists to the important role of creative biography in the creation of a work was also studied.
