Dermatologic manifestations of acute graft-versus-host disease after solid organ transplantation: A systematic review
Year: 2024
Type: review
Abstract: Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) following solid organ transplant (SOT) is a rare complication with 75% to 100% mortality.1 aGVHD occurs when immunologically competent T cells from the graft mount a destructive immune response against host tissues. The incidence of aGVHD is higher after intestine transplants (5.6%) and liver transplants (LTs) (1%-2%) due to the transfer of a large number of donor lymphocytes; the incidence is lower following kidney and kidney-pancreas transplants.1 The exact pathophysiology of aGVHD is still not completely elucidated, although it is postulated to be an evasion of host immune response by the donor lymphocytes and subsequent donor lymphocyte alloreactivity against host tissues.
