Influences of course evaluation frequency on teaching and student learning

Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: In examining the impact of course evaluation frequencies on teaching and student learning, research indicates that the timing and duration of courses can significantly influence students' evaluation behaviors and perceptions. The duration of the course, whether half or full semester, can impact students' evaluation criteria and the aspects they focus on.A study comparing a whole semester course to two half-semester (8 weeks long) courses taught by the author to the same student group in 2023 fall semester found that more than 70% students in the whole semester course conducted the course evaluations based on the contents learned only after the midterm, while more than 80% (average) students in the shorter duration courses referenced contents from the entire semester when doing the end-of-term evaluations. The data illustrate that shorter duration courses have high possibility to obtain more reliable evaluation results from students than the whole semester long courses if only assign one end semester course evaluation surveys to students. This further highlights the importance of increment of course evaluation frequencies during the semesters on instructor's teaching effectiveness and learner's intellectual growth and learning outcomes. In addition, understanding how students evaluate courses based on different timeframes can provide valuable insights into improving teaching practices and enhancing student learning experiences.
