Abstract: Bolted joints have been widely used in various engineering structures such as machinery, transportation, and aerospace. Bolted structure in the system will have a complex mechanical behavior under external loading, so it is of vital importance to predict the dynamic response characteristics. The Iwan model is a practical tool to describe the intrinsic behavior of joints, and the response of joints can be well predicted by parameter calibration through experimental or FEM simulation results. However, the existing Iwan model does not consider the plastic contact behavior of the bolt with the hole, and it also cannot characterize the response under impact loading well. In this paper, firstly, finite element simulation is carried out and the effects of velocity, preload force and friction coefficient on the displacement-load curves are discussed based on the results of parametric variable analysis. Subsequently, a dynamic Iwan model to characterize the collision as well as the failure (DICF model) of bolted joints subjected to impact loading is proposed, and the functional forms of the sliding section as well as the collision section are derived respectively. In addition, this paper also provides a method to extract correction parameters based on FEM results. Finally, the DICF model is compared with the finite element simulation results to verify it can describe the effects of velocity, preload force and friction coefficient very well, and successfully extend the classical Iwan model into a rate-dependent model that can describe the impact response of the bolted joint.
