Preliminary Analysis of Farmwide Lidar and Radar Results in the AWAKEN Experiment

Year: 2023
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Testable hypotheses in AWAKEN1.The maximum energy constrained by the momentum flux between the surrounding atmosphere and the wind farm 2. Dynamic intermittent turbulent bursting events lead to power fluctuations in wind farm power production 3. Wind turbines in the interior of wind farms tend to encounter more turbulence 4. Turbine wakes are impacted by stochastic events 5. Wind farm blockage depends on atmospheric and operating conditions 6. Wind farm wakes depend on atmospheric and operating conditions 7. Wind farm control works for large farms Current objective: How can the radar and lidar be leveraged to inform 5 and 6? Current approach: Studying these instruments in the virtual realm permits uncertainty quantification against the ground truth that's not possible in field. Conclusions Results Virtual Environment Lidar Configuration Radar Configuration Objectives DUAL-DOPPLER RADAR Deployed Configuration Scanning parameters: • Type: X-Band • Antenna Altitude: 363 m MSL • Along beam resolution: 9 m • PRF: 4280 Hz • Maximum range: 35.0 km • Nyquist Velocity: 34.3 m/s • Half-cone angle: 0.25 ° • Sector size: 145-deg • Sector scan speed: 30 °/s • Sector resolution: 0.35° • Elevation series: 0:0.1:1.7-deg(18 tilts) • Volume duration: ~2:05-2:10 Post-processing assumptions/choices: • 𝑤-component has negligible effect on line of sight • Ignore data within a rotor diameter of turbine • Timestamps less than ~2 minutes are matched for stereo calculation • Stereo data is interpolated to uniform grid: 50 m horizontal, 25 m verticalConclusions Results Virtual Environment Lidar Configuration Radar Configuration Objectives Conclusions Results Virtual Environment Lidar Configuration Radar Configuration Objectives
