Extraction and characterization of compounds from Punica granatum L.: case study of Mila region, Algeria

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The current experimental research article was conducted at the Abdelhafid Boussouf University Center in Mila, Algeria and deals with phenolic compound analysis and physicochemical properties of leaves, flowers as well seed oil from Punica granatum L. constituents. This study involves the extraction of a variety of bioactive compounds like polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids and antioxidant potential evaluation using already described methods. Extraction methods like maceration and decoction were employed as a means to these ends. Seed oil was obtained by cold pressing of seeds. Physicochemical analyses including moisture, pH and pigment contents were also determined Punica granatum L. extracts, bioactive property antioxidant yield. The result of the qualitative phytochemical study indicated that leaves and flowers contain polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins in abundance while saponins are high in oil. Quantitative analyses of total phenols and flavonoids revealed high contents in the oil part. Antioxidant activity was also assessed, and leaves and flowers showed remarkable scavenging effect. Thus, this research provides an eco-friendly approach which could help to recede the demand for synthetic and chemical based healthcare products in addition that it may open new avenues relating with health related plant resources.
