Abstract: Introduction. During football matches, referees are tasked with maintaining fair play and managing the game. Referees significantly influence the balance between teams, and football organizations are keen on recruiting, training, and promoting talented referees. However, sports officials remain on the periphery of sports research. The aim of this paper is to identify the issues present in managing the careers of football referees. Methods. The study utilized the documentary analysis method involving documents from sports organizations: the game rules, local acts of the Russian Football Union, and others. Literature analysis. Scientific works focused on various aspects of career management for sports referees were reviewed. It was concluded that despite increased interest in the topic, research in this field remains fragmented. Research results and its discussion. Football federations as examples of hybrid organizations. The study emphasizes that sports organizations are hybrid organizations, occupying an intermediate position between the free market and hierarchical structure. Careers within such structures are unique; a football referee can work simultaneously in multiple sports organizations at different levels, and their career advancement involves the possibility of officiating at competitions under higher-level organizations. Professionalization of sports officiating. The paper proposes the term “professionalization of sports officiating,” which is considered in two aspects: as a transition from a hobby to a career during career progression, and as endowing the activity of a sports referee with the attributes of permanent work as the sport develops. Continuous learning throughout career. Sports officiating exemplifies a profession where learning occurs throughout the career. Education plays such a vital role that institutions of inspection and professional mentorship have emerged within sports organizations. The paper outlines management issues specific to the careers of sports referees. The work contributes to understanding the careers of sports officials and raises the question of the need to find career management models that consider these features
