Collective and Particle Modes in the Classical Liquid [Thesis]

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Dense single component classical liquids are studied via time dependent correlation functions. The work is specifically addressed to high frequency and short wavelength phenomena near equilibrium as measured by probes such as thermal neutrons. Since these systems are both strongly interacting and without long lived structure, perturbation treatments in the potential or small deviations from equilibrium positions are not applicable. Hence several methods including the use of approximate normal modes and average particle motion (via self functions) are employed. The autocorrelation function of the phase space density plays a central role in the description as it introduces the interplay of single particle and collective aspects of the system in a natural way. Several models are presented based on the use of simple density modes and liquid phonon coordinates. The formalism of memory functions is used to analyze the results and provide a systematic framework for improvements.
