Abstract: In this paper, while using new historical materials, I have uncovered overlooked facts and their relationships and reconsidered the process by which sewage septic tank technology was acquired in Japan during the early stages from the end of the Meiji era to the middle of the Taisho era As a result, I clarified the mechanisms of septic tanks that were considered incomplete at the time and the mechanisms of some ‘complete’ septic tanks made with the involvement of Japanese engineers. I also pointed out the role played by Tatsuzo Sone and Seiichiro Chujo Architects in this process.
