Abstract: This study examines the layout of samurai residences in Odawara Castle Town during the late Okubo Period (1686-1871), and clarifies the changes and their factors by comparing with salary of retainers. Comparing the Genroku period with the Bunkyu period, it is clarified that the site space and the district of their residences were based on their salaries. The reasons for this change include disaster recovery from the Genroku Earthquake in 1703, and the removal of retainers from Edo to Odawara following the return of their Edo residences resulting from the death of two lords in 1713-1715.
