Navigating the landscape of energy governance: A bibliometric analysis of research trends and future directions

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Researchers have long been interested in how governments manage their energy resources. But only in the last two decades has the idea of "energy governance" been discussed in academic literature, with scholars having focused more on it recently. The importance of energy to the growth and advancement of civilizations means that we should focus on the key "energy governance" concerns that scholars have been debating for the past 20 years. By systematically reviewing the body of research on energy governance, the goal of this study is to provide an overall impression of the intellectual atmosphere among academics in this field and to pinpoint the areas that are anticipated to garner increased attention in the future. In this paper, a comprehensive assessment of every article published on the topic of energy governance in the Scopus database was carried out using bibliometric methods and keyword convergence analysis. The information presented in this article shows how the concepts have correlated and what themes have been more significant to energy governance scholars over the years, starting in 2006 when the first article in the area was published. This article's novelty lies in its systematic analysis of the keywords used in energy governance papers and the investigation of the themes' evolutionary trends across several time periods. The results indicate that "transition to renewable energy" and "energy security" have been two of the primary concerns of energy researchers. In the past ten years, researchers have also become interested in "climate changes" and "climate governance". It is anticipated that these challenges will receive greater attention from academics in the future. Additionally, the results show that researchers have focused significantly on the "participation" of people and societies in achieving "sustainable energy" in recent years.
