Network topology planning method for interconnecting large-scale renewable generators considering dynamic stability limitations

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Stability issues in power systems are attributed to the increasing use of renewable generators (RGs). During the renewable-generator planning phase, the effect of the renewable-generator network topology on stability must be assessed comprehensively for significantly enhancing renewable-power transmission efficiency. The existing network topology planning methods focus on economic factors and static safety constraints, while neglecting dynamic stability considerations. To address this gap, the effect of changes in network topology on the stability of RGs are analyzed in this study using a dynamic aggregation model, and a stability index is proposed to select an appropriate network topology. The stability of RGs improves with a decrease in the maximum eigenvalue of the impedance matrix of the network. Furthermore, the renewable-generator planning phase is investigated for multiple network topologies and numerous collection regions, while considering dynamic stability limitations. Moreover, the renewable-generator network topology planning steps are summarized from a dynamic stability perspective, and the stability of a power system connected to a large-scale RGs is improved without additional damping control. Two case studies are conducted to validate the accuracy of the analyzed results.
