A systematic review of multi-domain modelling techniques of gastric digestion

Type: preprint
Abstract: Advancements in hardware have enabled more sophisticated computational models that facilitate mechanistic studies through simulations of various interventions both in vivo and ex vivo. There is a growing need for a computational model that accurately simulates the mechanics and electrophysiology of the stomach under diverse operational conditions. A model as such would be crucial for analyzing gastric responses to medications and simulating specific types of gastric functional disorders such as gastroparesis or those induced by bariatric surgery or pyloroplasty. To be effective, the model must replicate the stomach's electrophysiology, the mechanical properties of the gastric tissues and digesta in both active and passive states, and the chemoelectrical-mechanical activation mechanisms. This review details the development of various gastric electrophysiological models, their integration into mechanical models, and the underlying electrochemistry. It also discusses how electromechanical modeling can reveal critical insights into gastric pathophysiology and addresses specific aspects of gastrointestinal functional disorders induced by drugs or surgical interventions. Lastly, this review proposes further research to elucidate the connections between gastric tissue deformations and gastric electrophysiological dynamics.
