Type: article
Abstract: Supporters of the papacy during the Investiture Controversy resorted to the teaching of pope Gelasius I on auctoritas sacrata and regalis potestas. Reformers proposed contradictory interpretations of the theory of the two powers that govern the world. Gregory VII highlighted the earthly power of the privilege of the Roman primacy. Alger of Liège prefered the Gelasian doctrine of the cancellation of the king - priest model and the distribution of functions within the church. The Gregorian reading arrived to the Decretum Gratiani distorting its author’s initial plan. The first book of the Corpus Iuris Canonici disseminated a collection of authorities on the relations between the sacerdotium and the regnum that assimilated the primacy of the pope to the temporal power of the emperor.
