Nurture and Maintain Impactful Volunteer Boards

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Volunteer board members have their own specific reason for serving an institution. While their motivations are bound to differ, the group's primary purpose must be singular — and development's job is to ensure this vision is crystal clear. “If the board's purpose isn't centered on driving philanthropic impact at the institution, major gift officers shouldn't be spending their time on it,” says Shontel Grumhaus, associate vice chancellor for development and chief strategist for schools/units at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “You need to have really clear parameters and prioritize the importance of being aligned from the top down,” adds Lindsay Russ, director of donor strategy and engagement, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “You must be super strategic about who you're putting onto your boards to maximize the opportunity.” Sources: Shontel Grumhaus, Associate Vice Chancellor for Development, Chief Strategist for Schools/Units, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC.
