Experimental investigation and performance evaluation of Samanea saman leaves and twigs gasification from urban residential garden waste as alternative future energy

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Urban residential garden waste represents a significant biomass resource, yet its energy potential remains underutilized. This investigation delves into the gasification potential of Samanea saman (rain tree) leaves and twig pellets to explore their viability for energy production. Gasification experiments were conducted using a 2 kW fixed-bed updraft gasifier with air as the gasifying medium. Gas composition, energy yield, tar content, and biomass and char morphology were evaluated. Gasification of rain tree pellets produced syngas with high hydrogen content (7.00% to 7.40% vol) and low tar levels, indicating promising energy yield for urban waste management and renewable energy production. Higher carbon conversion efficiency was achieved with twig pellets, ranging from 65.0% to 70.6%, and cold gas efficiency from 26.5% to 30.3%, compared to leaf pellets. This exploration underscores the viability of rain tree gasification as a sustainable avenue for urban residential garden waste management and renewable energy generation.
