Abstract: Geology logline: G.K. Gilbert developed the use of multiple working hypotheses when determining the cause of the differential elevation of shorelines at Lake Bonneville, providing a tacit recognition of the role of the mind.Cognitive science logline: There are aspects of doing science to which we do not have conscious access, and being aware of one's mind in the practice of geology can improve outcomes and reduce bias.
