Polymeric Composites or Nanocomposites Obtaining Using Friction Mixing Method
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Due to the low density and high chemical resistance of polymers compared to metals, the use of polymer composite materials in various industries is growing. On the other hand, because of the low strength of polymers, it is necessary to reinforce them, including micro- and nanoparticles. In recent years, one of the achievements in the industry of plastics and composite materials has been the nanocomposites development and production. They found application in automobile and airplane construction, household appliances and medical equipment. There are various processes for nanocomposite production, such as extrusion and mixing. The limitation of these processes is the high cost, multi-stage production process and the amount of nanosized reinforcing particles (not more than 5 % by mass). Recently, studies on the use of friction with mixing (friction mixing) method for the composite and nanocomposite production were conducted. Using this method for polymer composites and nanocomposites production, in the main polymer sheet a groove of certain sizes is made, and nanoparticles are inserted into this groove. Then the rotating tool is loaded into the sheet and moved along the groove to distribute the particles on the main material.
